Soprano Cristina Piperno played the icy Princess Turandot. Her dramatic entrance from the isolation of a pearly opalescent sphere was novel and entrancing. She was beautifully costumed with an elaborate and lengthy train that took some skillful navigation. She also skillfully navigated the fiendish difficulty of Puccini’s vocal line with an intelligent musicality. Her steely vocal quality suited Turandot’s abrasive cruelty. Her In questa Reggia was dramatically forceful. The final love duet for Piperno and Zulian was vocally striking and emotionally charged. |
